Our History

Cushing Civil Engineers was established in 1996 to serve local public, private, and commercial clients by offering the full spectrum of civil engineering expertise in site development.

Founded in Portland, we have since expanded to have offices in both Oregon and Florida, while completing engineering projects all over the United States. To better serve our clients and achieve project goals we have established valuable relationships with surveyors, mechanical, structural and electrical engineers, planners, environmental specialists, and landscape architects.

Our mission at Cushing Civil Engineers has always been to preserve and protect the general welfare of the public, by carefully planning and having open discussions about our project strategies. Over the past 23 years, our founder, Don Cushing, has made public presentations to City Councils, Planning Commissions, Hearings Officers and Engineering Departments.

In 2023, Kamal Thapa became part of the Cushing Civil Engineers team, assuming the role of Civil Designer. With a background in Industrial Engineering, Kamal brings a wealth of expertise in continuous improvement, optimization, and project management. This includes over 5 years of experience in designing and leading projects in telecommunication projects, encompassing Zoning drawings, Construction drawings, and Lease exhibits.

 

Kamal's primary focus revolves around the enhancement of Cushing's design standards and procedures. His commitment extends to the development, implementation, and vigilant monitoring of these standards to align seamlessly with customer requirements. The ultimate goal is to significantly reduce overall lead time, ensuring efficiency and client satisfaction.

Rob Howe, PM

Rob Howe joined Cushing Civil Engineers as a project manager in 2022. Rob’s background includes over 20 years of experience in estimating, design, and project management of residential and commercial construction projects.

Rob is a great addition to our Cushing team with several strengths including estimating, project management, managing large team base, sales/business development, logistics and quality assurance.

Kenny McManaway, PE

Kenny McManaway joined Don Cushing Associates in June 2004.  He became owner of  the company in January 2019.  His previous role as project manager for civil and telecommunications projects has provided him with experience of leading a team and directing projects. He is experienced in site layout, grading, utility coordination, sanitary sewer, stormwater systems and constructability. His duties also include client management, resourcing, site visits and construction management support.

Kenny’s previous experience focused on construction management in heavy civil infrastructure. This experience along with his design expertise allows him to provide exceptional interface between the owner, design team, jurisdiction and contractor.

Don's background includes over 30 years of experience in various facets of civil engineering including planning, agency processing, design, and project management for both private development and public works. He is actively involved in project management.

Don's expertise encompasses all elements of site design including grading, paving, storm drainage, storm detention, sanitary systems, water systems, water quality, street design, and highway design. His clients include architects, cities, counties, contractors, and private developers.

Jennifer McManaway

Jennifer McManaway began working at Cushing Civil Engineers in January 2019. As office manager Jenn works on a variety of tasks including billing, payroll, and organizing daily office operations.  She is a Red Cross CPR and First Aid Instructor and uses her certification skills to keep the office up to date on safety protocols.  

Prior to joining the team she worked in Orthodontics as a Treatment Coordinator.  She continues to work in the fitness industry as a fitness instructor and personal trainer.
